Did you know?

~On Scotland’s roads between 1951 and 2001 a total of around 1.29 million people were injured and a further 31,700 died.

~In 1962 there were around 775,000 vehicles on Scotland’s roads, by 2001 there were 2.262 million!

~In the twentieth century a total of more than 25 million people were killed in road accidents!

~In the United States, more than 1.8 million persons have died in traffic accidents since 1900. Annually nearly 18 million traffic accidents are reported in the United States.

~In the UK the direct costs of road accidents involving deaths or injuries is assessed to be in the region of £3 billion a year.

~It can be dangerous being on the hard shoulder! Research has shown that vehicles struck there had only been stationary for an average of less than 12 minutes! The same research showed 14 per cent of motorists stop on the hard shoulder for trivial reasons, such as adjusting mirrors, cleaning lights or to use a mobile phone!

~Three-quarters of unbelted people are thrown from the cars involved in serious accidents and of those, 75 per cent die.

~Around two-thirds of all accidents where people are killed or injured happen on roads where the speed limit is 30 mph or less!     An average family car travelling at 35mph will need an extra six metres (21 ft) to stop compared with a car travelling at 30mph.   If you hit a cyclist or pedestrian at 35mph the force of the impact is over a third greater than the force at 30mph.
