Group produced DVD productions
Lottery grant funding has been used in part to purchase video equipment allowing us to make our own DVDs and presentations with the aim of improving our guidance and training.
A selection of these productions is listed below. Some have been specifically created to assist our Associates to understand the techniques used in advanced driving, others form part of our Observer Training scheme.
The prices of these productions are subsidised for DGGAMM members. If you are not a DGGAMM member you will have to pay the higher price quoted, alternatively you may wish to take up DGGAMM membership which is £10.00 p.a. (2008/09 but subject to annual review); you have to be a current member of the IAM. This will allow you to purchase the items at the subsidised price. What happens on an IAM Skill for Life course? Run time 10mins
This DVD gives an overview of what happens on an IAM Skill for Life Advanced Driving course. It uses a selection of clips showing examples of an Associate undergoing the Introduction & Explanation, Demonstration and Guidance & Observed Drive elements of the Skill for Life programme. It also gives some information on the Advanced Test.
The aim is to give the viewer a taste of what will happen if they embark on a Skill for Life programme administered by the Group, it does not replace any element of the course. Use the menu to the left to view an abridged version on line.

‘The Art of Positioning’ run time 26 minutes approx.
This production gives examples of some of the factors which can be taken into account when considering what position to adopt, to maximise safety, in a variety of situations on the road. It considers general principles, especially related to advanced driving, through numerous scenarios recorded with the aid of ‘live’ footage from a camera car. All classes of road are considered from unclassified single track to motorway.
It is intended as a training aid and may be useful to those who have passed their advanced test or who have already made significant progress towards achieving test standard.

‘The Demonstration Drive’ running time 16 minutes approx.
This production shows how a demonstration drive can be delivered to a new Associate to give an overall insight into the use of the ‘system’ in advanced driving. It is primarily a training aid aimed at Observers and forms part of the training scheme delivered to Trainee Observers under the Qualified Observer scheme operated by Dumfries Group.
The production uses split screen ‘in car’ camera footage.

Advanced Driving Skills and The Commentary run time 21 minutes approx.
This production seeks to help drivers to get started and progress with the development of their commentary skills.
The presentation uses film footage of a variety of road types including country, A roads, trunk routes and urban environments.

Advanced Driving Skills and Overtaking run time 44 mins approx
This new production seeks to help drivers understand and develop safe techniques for overtaking. Topics covered include assessing the need to overtake and the factors affecting the decision to overtake. Two safe methods of overtaking on single carriageway roads are looked at in detail with the aid of explanatory graphics and in car footage.
Overtaking on motorways and other dual carriageways is also covered and many examples of overtaking on single and dual carriageways are shown with an associated commentary or explanation of the driver’s actions. Running time 44 mins, includes ‘The Overtaker’s Companion’ helpsheet.
